United States Supreme Court Strips Away Constitutional Right to Abortion
Roe v. Wade overturned by Dobbs v. Jackson Decision
WEST PALM BEACH, FL – Today’s radical Supreme Court decision – overturning Roe v. Wade and upending 50 years of precedent – is nothing short of devastating. Although abortion remains legal in Florida for now, we know this decision will needlessly harm the lives of millions for years to come.
We already know the consequences of this decision: Dozens of states can quickly move to ban abortion. Twenty-six states are poised to quickly ban abortion — including 13 states with laws that could immediately go into effect. That’s half the country where people will no longer have power and control over their own bodies and their own lives.
Banning abortion does not take away people’s need to access abortion care. And we know that abortion bans disproportionately harm Black, Latino, Indigenous, and other people of color because of this country's legacy of racism and discrimination. There have always been barriers to access abortion and other health services — like the need to find child care, take time off of work, and navigate the costs of transportation and lodging associated with traveling hundreds or even thousands of miles for care. This decision means the number of people forced to overcome these huge hurdles to essential health care will skyrocket.
The Women’s Foundation of Florida has and always will believe in a person’s fundamental human right to freely access abortion care and will work to ensure that right. We believe that every person should be able to live, work, and make decisions about their health and future with dignity and respect. When people can make decisions about their own reproductive health care, including whether and when to have children, they have more control over their economic security.
