Why NEW Exists
In 2018, the nation celebrated what many called The Year of the Woman in elections. Across the country — and here in Florida — women were being elected to local office in unprecedented numbers.
But at the very same time, something troubling was happening. We saw many of those same women leaving office early. Not because they lacked talent, commitment, or vision — but because they were navigating the job without the support, resources, and solidarity they needed to thrive.
That’s when the Women’s Foundation of Florida launched the Network of Elected Women (NEW). Our purpose is simple and urgent: to ensure women in local office have the tools, connections, and encouragement to serve effectively and sustainably.

Who We Serve
If you are a woman who has been elected to serve your community — at any level — NEW is for you.
From city commissioners and mayors to school board members and special taxing district leaders, we welcome women in every form of elected office. Today, more than 100 elected leaders across Florida are part of the NEW network, and our reach continues to grow.

What We Do
We know that winning your election is only the first step. Once you take the oath, the real challenges begin. That’s why NEW provides:
  • Peer-to-Peer Connection
Build relationships with women who understand your challenges, celebrate your wins, and offer guidance from lived experience.
  • Skill-Building Opportunities
Access workshops, trainings, and special events to sharpen your leadership skills, navigate complex political systems, and manage the demands of public service.
  • Behind-the-Scenes Learning
Join exclusive tours and insider experiences that broaden your understanding of how local systems operate.
  • Sisterhood & Solidarity
Step into a space where you can be candid, find encouragement, and remind yourself you are not alone in this work.

Why It Matters
Serving in public office as a woman comes with unique pressures — from balancing your role with personal and professional responsibilities, to facing gender bias, to building coalitions in complex political environments.
NEW is here to ensure that no woman has to navigate those realities alone. When women in office are supported, our communities are stronger, more inclusive, and better served.

How to Get Involved
Join the NEW network and gain access to events, resources, and a community that has your back. Participation is open to all women currently serving in elected positions.
For Supporters: Not an elected woman but want to help? You can support NEW by sponsoring events, sharing your expertise, or making a donation to sustain our programs.

Types of Opportunities
  • NEW Annual Happy Hour at the Florida League of Cities Conference — Our signature social event for connection and camaraderie.
  • NEW Behind-the-Scenes Tours — Exclusive access to places where local leadership happens.
  • NEW Leadership Workshops — Practical, relevant skill-building designed for elected women.
You lead for your community. We’re here to lead for you.
