Today, I’m going to be sharing another The Mary Sue article, which covered the importance of the wording you use when you advertise an event.
The main subject of this article is an Orlando Elementary School created a STEM night at the local science museum geared towards boys and their mothers as a parallel to their annual Father/Daughter dance.
While this event was created with the innocent intent to offer Mother/Son bonding, it does so at the expense of girls who enjoy STEM. Even though their is a disclaimer on the flyer the school sent that they would not deny any student the ability to purchase a ticket, the fact that they explicitly advertise to boys in the flyer creates the understanding that the girls who do end up attending the event are the exception, not the norm, especially in comparison to boys.
To understand more about the problems that come from advertising a boys only STEM event and this situation with the FL elementary school, please visit the following Mary Sue article: Florida School Creates STEM Night Geared Towards Boys, Offers Dance for Girls.
